I love pastel for the amazing and unique qualities of luminosity that can be achieved by applying multiple layers of pigment (consisting of very fine crystals), onto lightly sanded paper, which gives it the ability to blend optically in the viewer's eye in beautiful and surprising ways. It allows me to express my vision in a primal and direct manner like the ancient cave painters of Lascaus, transmitting the human spirit through touch using charcoal and pure pigments from the earth in an unbroken lineage from their time to ours. Sharon Kirk
I work in the very bright colors I've come to call -- in the vernacular of music -- my "major" colors. As a child, I lived in Sweden when bold, energetic colors and Scandinavian design furnishings were coming into the fore. That time has influenced my color choices ever since. With each of my Blue Kids portraits, I use "the majors" to capture the tremendous intensity expressed by my subjects. I want the artwork to present a particular personality, and transcend it at the same time. I strive to bring the same passion and verve to my botanical work...along with a few blue hands and fingers.
