Stella began photographing about the same time she began traveling - as a foreign exchange student to Costa Rica in 1965. Her photographs are like paintings: she thinks of the lens as brush and light as pigment. "I look with the camera for patterns and icons in paint and on walls that resonate deep inside with ancient meanings and feelings; landscapes that tell a story of what it feels like in that light."
